Making people wait 10 years instead of 5 to become Dutch citizens would create more problems than it solves. If someone has not integrated after 5 years, waiting another 5 will not suddenly change that. Instead, it keeps people in a stressful situation for much longer. Non-EU expats can only stay in the Netherlands as long as they have a job, and if they lose it, they must leave the EU within three months — which is often not enough time to find new work in today’s job market. This constant risk makes people feel insecure and less likely to settle down, buy a house, or start a family here. It would also make the Netherlands less attractive for skilled workers, since other countries offer quicker and more secure paths to citizenship. Longer waiting times do not help integration; they actually push people away, leaving them feeling excluded from society and unable to fully take part in democratic life. Allowing naturalisation after 5 years gives people a sense of belonging and encourages them to invest in Dutch society. Extending it to 10 years, on the other hand, risks creating more people who live here but feel like outsiders. This would harm both the individuals and Dutch society, without bringing real benefits.
