I'm writing to share my concern about the proposed extension to the naturalization period. As a highly skilled expat living and working in the Netherlands, I'm deeply invested in this country's future. Like many of my peers, I contribute to essential sectors of the Dutch economy and pay taxes here, actively helping to strengthen the nation I now call home.

However, extending the naturalization timeline feels like a step backward. It risks making the Netherlands less attractive, not just for people like me who are already here, but also for talented professionals considering their future in Europe. When I look at countries like Germany—which has shortened its naturalization period to as little as three years in some cases and allows dual nationality—I worry that the Netherlands is becoming less competitive.

Requiring us to wait longer and renounce our original citizenship creates real emotional and practical hurdles. Many of us want to fully commit to Dutch society, but these barriers make that commitment more difficult. I'm concerned this policy could lead skilled immigrants to choose other countries, which would ultimately harm the Dutch economy in the long run.
