The proposal to extend the naturalization period undermines efforts to attract highly skilled migrants. Under the current system, the 30% ruling combined with the opportunity to acquire Dutch nationality serves as a significant incentive, particularly due to the benefits of social security. However, with the recent changes to the 30% ruling—and now extending the period of naturalisation, skilled migrants will face reduced earnings and greater uncertainty, which could discourage them from relocating to the Netherlands.
This shift also presents a major challenge for employers, who may struggle to retain and attract top talent, potentially resulting in a critical shortage of highly skilled workers. To maintain competitiveness, there should be an absolute exemption for such migrants to ensure the Netherlands remains an attractive destination for global talent.
