This proposed extension of the naturalization term from five to ten years is extremely unreasonable and unfair. It unnecessarily delays the integration and participation of long-term residents who are already contributing to Dutch society. Doubling the waiting time will create uncertainty, frustration, and a sense of exclusion among those who have built their lives here in good faith.
At the very least, this law must include a transition period for current residents who have already started their naturalization process under the existing five-year rule. Changing the rules without such a provision would be deeply unjust and would punish people who have followed all requirements and made their plans accordingly.
This proposal risks damaging trust in the Dutch government and sends a discouraging message to all who seek to become full, active members of the Netherlands.
