We moved to the Netherlands three years ago under the Highly Skilled Migrant (kennismigrant) scheme. When deciding to relocate, one of the important factors was the current naturalisation rule that allows us to apply for Dutch nationality after five years of lawful residence.

The new proposal to extend the residence period from five to ten years makes no mention of a transition period. This means that people like us, who are already well advanced in our five-year trajectory, would suddenly see the goalposts moved halfway through.

We respectfully request that a clear transition arrangement is included in the law, so that those who have already started their residence under the current five-year rule can still naturalise after five years. Without this, the proposal would be unfair to families who have planned their future based on the rules in place when they moved.
