I am writing in response to the consultation regarding the proposal to extend the naturalisation period in the Netherlands from 5 years to 10 years.
With respect, I would like to express my concern and opposition to this proposed change. The current 5-year period already represents a significant commitment of time during which newcomers demonstrate integration, stability, and their contribution to Dutch society. Extending this period to 10 years risks discouraging integration rather than supporting it.
Becoming a Dutch citizen is not only a legal step, but also a deeply personal milestone. A longer waiting period would mean that people who are already working, paying taxes, raising families, and building their lives in the Netherlands must wait much longer before they are fully recognised as equal members of society. This could create feelings of exclusion rather than belonging, which I believe would be counterproductive to the goals of social cohesion.
I strongly believe that the current 5-year naturalisation period strikes the right balance between ensuring genuine commitment to the Netherlands and providing a fair and achievable path to citizenship.
Thank you for considering this perspective in your decision-making process.
Yours sincerely,
