With due respect, I would like to express my strong opposition to the proposed extension of the naturalisation period.
My husband and I are both working in the Netherlands in the technology sector under the Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM) scheme. We contribute significantly to the economy as high taxpayers and, before relocating, we carefully reviewed the rules and regulations regarding naturalisation timelines, education, healthcare, traffic rules, and other aspects of Dutch society.
We have now been living here for 2.5 years. Although Dutch language skills are not strictly required in our professional environment, we are actively learning the language and participating in cultural events, such as local carnivals to integrate better into society.
Extending the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years will not accelerate integration but on contrary, it risks leaving highly skilled migrants like us in a prolonged state of uncertainty. We came here with long-term planning, in good faith, and with a willingness to contribute to society. Such a change would create a sense of insecurity and disappointment, and could even lead families like ours to consider relocating to other European countries with more stable political decisions and clearer pathways for skilled migrants.
Additionally, it is already disheartening that, despite abiding by all rules and contributing through higher taxes, we HSM visa immigrants will ultimately not be entitled to a full AOW pension but we still are contributing into the taxes.
I therefore urge you to reconsider this proposal and to maintain a fair and predictable naturalisation period i.e. 5 years for the HSM visa holders and their familes that recognises the contributions and commitment of highly skilled migrants with their hard earned money.
