Dear Madam/Sir,
I am writing to share my deep concern about the proposal to extend the naturalisation period from five to ten years. While I understand the intention is to ensure stronger ties with the Netherlands, I fear this change will have the opposite effect—especially for people who are already making vital contributions to our society and economy.
Many knowledge migrants, international professionals, and skilled workers choose the Netherlands because of its openness, stability, and opportunities. These individuals are not only filling critical roles in our workforce but are also paying taxes, raising families here, and enriching Dutch society. For them, citizenship is more than a passport—it is the recognition that they truly belong. Forcing them to wait ten years risks pushing talent away to countries that offer a clearer, faster path to belonging.
Other nations have realised that speeding up integration, not delaying it, is the way forward. Germany, for example, recently reduced its naturalisation period to five years, and even three in cases of strong integration. Canada requires only three years of residence, and the United States five (or three for spouses of citizens). These countries are not weakening themselves—they are strengthening their societies and economies by ensuring that motivated, skilled people feel at home sooner.
The Netherlands should not fall behind. If we extend the period to ten years, we risk losing exactly the kind of people who help our economy grow, support innovation, and contribute to the overall well-being of the Kingdom.
Instead of extending the waiting time, we should be focusing on fast-tracking integration. Strong language skills, civic participation, and stable employment should open doors sooner, not later. By rewarding people who are committed to the Netherlands, we encourage deeper belonging, stronger loyalty, and faster contributions to our shared future.
I respectfully urge you to reconsider this proposal. A longer path to citizenship is not the answer. A smarter, fairer, and faster integration process will serve both newcomers and the Netherlands much better.
Best Regards
