Extending the naturalization period from five to ten years is deeply disappointing. As a highly skilled immigrant, I have structured my entire life around the existing five-year rule. From the moment I arrived in the Netherlands two years ago, I have been taking Dutch language classes and working diligently toward integration. Unfortunately, without an EU passport, securing a suitable and stable position remains extremely challenging for me. It is also unfair that such a change would apply to individuals who have already arrived and made long-term plans under the previous law. Moreover, by approving this new legislation, fewer highly skilled immigrants will be willing to come to the Netherlands, diminishing the country’s attractiveness as a place to work, contribute, and build a future.
