The proposed increase in the residency requirement for Dutch citizenship from five to ten years is a short-sighted policy that directly harms the Netherlands’ economic future and damages the trust of highly skilled migrants (HSMs) like myself.
I came here nearly three years ago, investing my career, my taxes, and my life under the clear expectation of a five-year pathway to naturalization. This pathway is a global standard—a commitment that motivates the world's top talent to choose the Netherlands.
Doubling the wait time to a full decade sends a toxic signal: "You are valuable for your tax contributions, but we do not fully trust your long-term commitment." This isn't just bureaucratic red tape; it's a profound breach of faith. It discourages deeper social integration and turns highly sought-after professionals into long-term temporary residents.
If this policy passes, many talented individuals—the very people filling critical skill gaps—will simply leave for countries that offer more security and a faster path to full citizenship. We are committed to the Netherlands, but our commitment requires a reasonable expectation of stability in return.
The government should scrap this counterproductive proposal and maintain the five-year residency period. To do otherwise is to prioritize arbitrary restrictions over economic prosperity and talent retention
