I lost my parents at a young age and, as an adult, I married a Dutch husband with the hope of starting a new and stable life in the Netherlands. I deeply value this country, I am doing my best to integrate, and I aspire to become a Dutch citizen in the future.
Extending the naturalisation period to 10 years and abolishing the 3-year exemption does not help immigrants integrate better. On the contrary, it creates a significant barrier that makes it harder for us to feel confident, to connect, and to build a secure future here. Being able to become a Dutch citizen earlier would give me more confidence to participate fully in Dutch society and to integrate faster into the community.
I fully understand and support the idea of tightening immigration rules in order to protect the rights and interests of Dutch citizens. However, people who migrate through marriage or registered partnership with Dutch citizens do not create additional pressure on housing or social benefits. On the contrary, we work, pay taxes, and contribute to the Dutch economy and society.
I am truly disappointed by this proposal, as it becomes a major obstacle to building a family and a stable life in the Netherlands — after I have given up everything in my home country to follow my partner. I sincerely hope that Parliament will reconsider and keep the 3-year exemption, so that people like me can genuinely integrate and become part of Dutch society.
I also hope that the small voice of a Dutch citizen’s wife, and a future mother like myself, will be heard.
Thank you.
