Can we reconsider how doubling the naturalization period will actually support integration? The current system has worked for years—what evidence suggests it no longer works? And why specifically ten years? Why not six or seven, or any other number?

Most European countries, including the Netherlands until now, maintain a five-year period. Extending it to ten creates a significant deviation without clear justification.

It is also important to understand the target group of this proposal. Is the intention to limit asylum seekers, immigrants, or expats? The impact will fall mostly on tax-paying residents, who have alternatives within the EU and may choose to leave. Those who rely on government benefits, however, may simply remain, making the change ineffective for its supposed goal.

Finally, people make life plans—work, family, education—based on existing rules. It is not ethical or fair for a nation to change the terms midway for those already in the system. Any new rules should only apply to newcomers who can make an informed choice from the start.
