I am currently in my fourth year of living and working in the Netherlands and was planning to apply for citizenship next year under the current five-year rule. The Netherlands has offered me great opportunities — both professionally in the IT sector and personally as part of a welcoming, well-integrated society.

The proposal to extend the naturalisation period to 10 years is concerning. It would make the Netherlands less attractive for skilled professionals, delay integration, and introduce uncertainty for those who have already committed to building a future here.

I hope the government will reconsider this proposal, as it risks discouraging international talent and undermining the country’s strong reputation as a destination for skilled migrants
