I work in a prestigious Dutch science institute and know there are scientists who want to become Dutch to avoid the discrimination they face due to their home country citizenship. Historically, many great scientists obtained another country’s citizenship in order to travel, stay, and continue their scientific work (e.g., Albert Einstein).

By extending the citizenship period to 10 years, Dutch society would lose these people, who not only contribute to making Dutch society richer and more prosperous, but also expand science and knowledge.

So I don’t think the integration problem would be solved by increasing the citizenship period. From a taxpayer’s perspective, you would have a large group in the Netherlands who are required to pay taxes like normal citizens while being deprived of the right to vote and influence their daily lives. This creates a second-class population alongside the first.
