I believe that the Netherlands should maintain the current five-year residency requirement for citizenship rather than extending it to ten years. The existing system strikes a fair balance between integration and opportunity, while also serving as an important factor in attracting highly skilled and educated individuals to the country.

In an increasingly competitive global environment, many countries are actively working to simplify and accelerate their naturalization processes in order to draw in international talent. The Netherlands has long been known for its openness, innovation, and economic strength and values that are reinforced when skilled professionals are encouraged to build their futures here. Extending the naturalization period could risk discouraging such individuals, thereby affecting innovation, productivity, and long-term economic growth.

Furthermore, if any change to the naturalization period is to be implemented, it would be reasonable and fair for it to apply only to new residents who arrive after the law takes effect, and not retroactively to those who are already in the process of building their lives and integrating into Dutch society. Sudden changes to existing pathways can create uncertainty and a sense of instability among current residents, which would be counterproductive to the goal of social cohesion.

In conclusion, maintaining the five-year requirement or ensuring that any policy changes are applied prospectively will help the Netherlands remain a competitive, inclusive, and forward-looking country that continues to attract and retain global talent.
