I am concerned about the proposal to extend the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years. The existing 5-year timeframe is sufficient for newcomers to prove their integration, language proficiency, and dedication to Dutch society. Doubling this period to 10 years would create an unnecessarily prolonged and discouraging path to citizenship for many families already living, working, and contributing in the Netherlands.
Citizenship is more than a legal status; it encourages individuals to fully engage in Dutch society through work, education, and community involvement. Extending the naturalization period risks fostering exclusion rather than promoting inclusion.
