I first came to the Netherlands as a student 3 years ago, and since then, the opportunities this country has opened for me have been unparalleled. The quality of life, the safety, and the sense of structure here are unmatched. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that similar opportunities exist in a few other countries as well. My choice to stay in the Netherlands after my studies was deliberate: I saw a long-term future for myself here, one where I could contribute to society, the economy, and the community.
For this reason, the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years feels discouraging. During those years, migrants like me continue to work, pay taxes, and contribute to Dutch society in meaningful ways, yet remain outsiders in the formal sense. Extending the waiting period risks creating a prolonged sense of alienation, even for those who are fully committed to making the Netherlands their permanent home.
Citizenship is not simply a legal status; it is also a foundation for belonging and deeper integration. I believe that maintaining the 5-year period strikes the right balance, ensuring migrants have demonstrated commitment while also enabling them to fully participate in and contribute to Dutch society in a timely manner.
