Many expatriates understand and support the importance of integration, but feel that extending the naturalization period to 10 years is deeply unfair and disheartening. Many moved to the Netherlands with hope, commitment, and dreams of building a future here — based on the current 5-year path to citizenship. Changing the rules now would leave them feeling stuck and uncertain. They believe that effort and dedication should matter, especially for those who actively learn Dutch and integrate into society. I fear this proposal will push away skilled workers and families who see the Netherlands as a welcoming home, especially while neighboring countries like Germany are making citizenship easier. I do welcome the plan to raise the language requirement from A2 to B1, seeing it as a fairer and more meaningful way to encourage true integration.
