As a law-abiding expat resident (3 years), I oppose doubling the naturalisation wait from 5 to 10 years.
No evidence of a problem. The policy note says the change follows a political wish/coalition deal, not a demonstrated failure of the 5-year rule.
Worse integration & participation. The state itself notes people can’t fully participate (e.g., national voting, certain public roles) until they’re citizens; doubling the wait delays belonging and civic investment.
Disproportionate for families. Spouse/partner routes jump to 5 years, and some facilitations are scrapped—penalising binational families and long-settled residents without clear gain.
Keep the 5-year standard and improve integration through language/participation requirements (already planned), instead of withholding citizenship for an extra five years that adds cost, bureaucracy, and weaker integration with no proven benefit.
