I strongly oppose the proposed extension of the naturalization period from five to ten years. Implementing such a major change on short notice would be highly disadvantageous to many residents who have built their lives in the Netherlands under the current system.

The process of becoming a Dutch citizen is already demanding. Finding stable employment within the limited one-year orientation period is a significant challenge in the current job market. Those who manage to do so—while learning the Dutch language, integrating into society, and contributing through taxes—demonstrate clear commitment and reliability as future citizens.

Extending the naturalization period would create unnecessary uncertainty for these individuals. The inability to obtain citizenship in a reasonable timeframe often limits access to certain rights and opportunities, discouraging talented and motivated people from choosing to build their futures in the Netherlands. In the long run, this could negatively impact the country’s attractiveness to skilled workers and international graduates.

Moreover, many residents have made long-term plans based on the existing five-year rule. Changing the requirement midway through their stay would be unfair and burdensome. People have invested significant effort, financial resources, and years of their lives under the expectation of the current pathway. A sudden policy shift undermines that trust.

Therefore, I urge the government not to proceed with this proposal. However, if the extension is ultimately adopted, it should only apply to individuals who arrive in the Netherlands after the new law takes effect, ensuring fairness and predictability for those already residing and contributing here.
