I respectfully disagree with the proposal to extend the naturalisation period from 5 years to 10 years.
The current 5-year requirement already ensures that applicants are integrated and committed to Dutch society. Extending the period to 10 years would create unnecessary barriers for many long-term residents who are already working, studying, paying taxes, and raising families in the Netherlands.
This proposal risks discouraging participation and integration instead of strengthening it. A 10-year waiting period could:
Delay people’s ability to fully contribute as citizens, including voting and civic participation.
Create insecurity for families who are already settled and integrated.
Put the Netherlands out of line with many EU countries, where 5 years is the standard.
Instead of extending the waiting period, the government could strengthen integration by:
Improving Dutch language and civic integration programs
Supporting employment and education opportunities
Encouraging community involvement
For those who have already reached 5 years of residence, it would be fair and just to maintain their eligibility under the current rule. Changing the law retroactively would cause uncertainty and hardship.
I ask the government to reconsider this extension and keep the naturalisation period at 5 years, while focusing on more effective measures to promote integration.
