I have worked for the past four years in talent acquisition in the fields of science and technology at one of the Netherlands’ leading research universities. During this time, I have gained first-hand experience recruiting highly skilled staff — from postdoctoral researchers to full professors — primarily for science and technology positions.
The Netherlands depends heavily on highly skilled migrants in these areas. These professionals not only advance research and innovation but also come with the clear intention of building their lives here, bringing their families, and contributing to Dutch society as their new home.
Extending the naturalization period from five to ten years would unnecessarily delay their integration and deprive them of equal opportunities compared to other immigrant groups and the wider society. It would also affect their children and families, who deserve the same opportunities as their peers, and prevent them from fully participating in the democratic process of the country to which they contribute through their work and taxes.
Such a change risks discouraging precisely the people who are driving scientific progress and strengthening the Dutch economy. I respectfully urge reconsideration of this proposal in light of its potential negative impact on integration, equality, and the Netherlands’ long-term ability to attract and retain international talent.
