I was very disappointed to hear about the proposed change to extend the citizenship requirement in the Netherlands from 5 to 10 years. This feels disheartening for many of us who have made real efforts to integrate, contribute to Dutch society, and build our lives here.

For people who work, pay taxes, follow the rules, and are part of the community, 5 years is already a significant period to prove commitment. Extending it to 10 years feels unfair and discouraging — especially for those who have planned their futures around the current system.

Citizenship isn’t just about a passport — it’s about belonging, stability, and being able to fully participate in the country we now call home. Changing the rules halfway through the process undermines trust and puts many people in uncertain positions. I truly hope this decision is reconsidered.
