As a highly skilled migrant who has lived and worked in the Netherlands since 2019, I would like to express my genuine concern and disagreement regarding the government’s recent move to extend the naturalisation period from five to ten years.
This change feels unfair to many of us who have built our lives here under the understanding that, after five years of lawful residence, integration, and contribution to Dutch society, we would be eligible to apply for citizenship. We have invested significant effort into learning the Dutch language, integrating culturally, and contributing economically, with the expectation of eventually being recognised as full members of this community.
To double the required period at this stage undermines that trust and disregards the commitment shown by thousands of skilled professionals who chose the Netherlands for its fairness, openness, and clarity of process. It also risks making the country less attractive to international talent, at a time when retaining skilled workers is vital to economic growth and innovation.
I respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal or, at the very least, to introduce a fair transitional arrangement for those already on the path to naturalisation under the current five-year rule.
