I strongly disagree with the proposal to increase the Dutch naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years. While the intention may be to ensure deeper integration, the negative consequences of such a change especially for skilled migrants would outweigh any potential benefits.

Extending the path to citizenship to 10 years will make the Netherlands significantly less attractive to highly skilled workers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and international professionals.

Moreover, people who are already in the Netherlands under work permits or long-term residence permits may reconsider staying. Waiting 10 years for full citizenship rights including the ability to vote, travel freely, and have long-term security is a major disincentive. In 10 years, a lot can change both in people’s personal circumstances and in geopolitical conditions. Many may not feel safe committing to a country that withholds full inclusion for so long.

The impact of this policy could be economically damaging. The Netherlands relies on attracting global talent, especially in sectors like tech, healthcare, and engineering. If these individuals stop choosing the Netherlands as their destination, the workforce will shrink, innovation will slow, and tax contributions may drop. Long-term exclusion can also lead to disengagement, which affects social cohesion and integration far more than shorter naturalisation periods.

A 5-year pathway is a balanced and fair timeframe. It allows people enough time to demonstrate their commitment to the country, integrate into society, and meet the necessary requirements (such as language and civic integration). Extending this to 10 years feels punitive and risks pushing away precisely the kind of people the Netherlands wants to attract.

In conclusion, the proposal to increase the naturalisation period to 10 years would be a step backward for migrants, for integration, and for the country as a whole. The Netherlands should remain open, competitive, and fair. Keeping the naturalisation period at 5 years is not just the right thing to do it’s the smart thing to do.
