Extending the naturalization requirement from five years to ten years would not be a positive step for the Netherlands. Such a change risks sending the wrong signal to those who have responsibly, legally, and wholeheartedly chosen to make this country their home. Many of us moved here with our families, leaving behind our countries of origin to start fresh, guided by the belief in the values and future the Netherlands represents. For parents, this decision was made with our children in mind—ensuring they could grow up immersed in Dutch language, culture, education, and society. For students and professionals, it meant dedicating ourselves to studying, working diligently, and building a long-term future here.
Over the years, we have actively worked to integrate: learning Dutch, respecting the laws, paying taxes, pursuing education or employment, volunteering where possible, and contributing to community life. Both we and our children are not here temporarily; we are investing our lives in the Netherlands with the intention of contributing meaningfully to its strength and future for decades to come.
It is essential to distinguish between those who genuinely integrate and add value to Dutch society versus those who do not respect its systems or engage in it. Extending the waiting period from five to ten years overlooks this important difference and risks discouraging the very individuals who bring long-term value. It delays their ability to truly belong and, as a result, diminishes their motivation to continue investing in integration and contribution.
We respectfully urge you to reconsider this proposal. A fair and balanced naturalization pathway should recognize and reward individuals who follow the rules, meet their obligations, and want to make lasting contributions to Dutch society. By maintaining such an approach, the Netherlands will continue to attract hardworking, talented, and committed people who are proud to call this country their permanent home.
