I am concerned about the proposed changes to the Dutch naturalisation law, particularly the plan to extend the required residence period from 5 to 10 years.

The original purpose of the law was to attract and integrate legal, well-educated, and skilled talent who actively contribute to the Netherlands’ economy and society. Extending the waiting time will make this pathway to citizenship far less accessible, especially for those who have already demonstrated strong integration through work, education, and community involvement.

This change risks discouraging international talent from committing long-term to the Netherlands. Instead of fostering loyalty and belonging, it may push skilled residents to leave the country for more inclusive jurisdictions, which would undermine the Netherlands’ reputation as an open, knowledge-driven economy.

I urge you to reconsider this proposal and to ensure that Dutch naturalisation policy remains aligned with its original intent: creating a fair, achievable, and welcoming path to citizenship for those who are already building their lives and careers here.
