Objection to Extending Naturalization from 5 to 10 Years – Netherlands
To the Dutch Parliament and Authorities,
I strongly oppose the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years. This change is harmful socially, economically, and politically.
Key reasons:
Contrary to International Trends
Germany recently reduced naturalization from 8 ? 5 years.
Canada grants citizenship within 3 years.
Other EU countries are simplifying paths to citizenship; the Netherlands would be moving backward.
Creates a Permanent Underclass
Denies full rights to residents who live, work, and pay taxes in the Netherlands.
Causes frustration, alienation, and low trust in institutions.
Risks social tension and radicalization.
Increases Illegal Residency & Security Risks
Longer waiting periods encourage undocumented stays.
Makes residents invisible to authorities, vulnerable to exploitation, and easier for extremist ideologies to spread.
Could indirectly raise petty crime and terrorism risks.
Disrespects Migrant Contributions
Many migrants work in essential sectors (healthcare, logistics, education).
Delaying citizenship discourages talent, investment, and social participation.
Weakens Democracy & Social Cohesion
Citizens denied for 10 years have no political voice.
Reduces integration, civic engagement, and national unity.
Economic Harm
Limits productivity, discourages long-term settlement, shrinks tax base.
Counterproductive in a country facing labor shortages.
Conclusion:
Extending naturalization to 10 years is not “tough,” it is toxic. It undermines integration, public safety, democracy, and the Netherlands’ international reputation. Lawmakers should reject this proposal and support inclusive, forward-looking citizenship policies.
