To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Arshia Firouz, and I am a pianist and composer studying at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with a talent grant. I am writing to express my concern regarding the proposal to extend the naturalisation period for Dutch citizenship from five to ten years.

I have great admiration for Dutch culture — a culture deeply rooted in democracy, egalitarianism, social responsibility, tolerance, and innovation. These values are precisely what drew me to the Netherlands and made me wish to build my life and career here.

The Netherlands depends greatly on international talent across the arts, sciences, and entrepreneurship. Many of us who come here are eager to contribute to this society and to establish a permanent, meaningful connection with it. However, extending the naturalisation period to ten years would create a major obstacle for international professionals and students like myself.

As a composer, pianist, and future entrepreneur planning to establish a music academy in the Netherlands, I view citizenship as the essential foundation for stability, investment, and full civic participation. If this proposal becomes law, I — and many talented individuals in similar positions — will almost certainly reconsider our future here. Personally, I would be compelled to take my work and creativity elsewhere, to a country where my dedication and contribution can be fully recognised through the right to citizenship.

I therefore urge you to maintain the current five-year naturalisation period, which reflects the Netherlands’ long-standing commitment to openness, inclusion, and mutual growth.

Kind regards,
Arshia Firouz
