I strongly object to extending the general naturalization term from five to ten years.
Highly skilled migrants are admitted under strict conditions and already prove long-term commitment through work, tax contributions, and integration exams.
Extending the waiting period will reduce the Netherlands’ attractiveness for international talent compared to other EU countries (e.g., Belgium 5 yrs, Portugal 5 yrs, Germany 5–8 yrs).
Longer waiting times risk delaying integration, as citizenship provides security and full civic participation, encouraging migrants to invest socially and economically.
The current five-year requirement is already strict but fair; there is no evidence that ten years improves integration outcomes.
The Netherlands aims to remain a knowledge economy, discouraging skilled professionals from settling long-term undermines this goal.
Request: Keep the current 5-year term for naturalization, or at least maintain an exception for highly skilled migrants and knowledge workers.
