To Whom It May Concern,
The proposal that will extend the residency requirement for neutralization from five to
ten years came as a disappointment for me and my family, and I would like to oppose
this legislation change without any differentiation between candidates under different
circumstances.
The Netherlands owes its prosperity to welcoming diversity, attracting international
talent who contributes to economic growth. These contributors are willing to integrate
in the local community via learning the language, establishing strong ties with
neighbours and colleagues, and finally be officially awarded with the nationality of the
country they established bonds with. This is also valid for my child who studied in
taalschool and now attends to an openbare basisschool, and I would like to see her
fully integrate as a nationality holder before her university years. With these efforts, I
think five years is a fair durable connection period to earn the citizenship rights and
shape the future of the country towards common goals.
For what it’s worth, the residency requirement could well be differentiated by
considering the contribution to the social security system, level of education etc. so
that the country keeps its prosperity by continuing to attract skilled workforce and
honouring them with its citizenship status. For current residents, I hope the five-year
condition stays as is, or at least increased gradually with regards to reasonable
conditions, like the potential citizenship law in UK. The matter requires a rational
approach, in my opinion, rather than a political agenda in the short term.
Regards,
Afshin
