As a South African living in the Netherlands, I wish to express my strong concerns regarding the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years.
I have made significant efforts to integrate into Dutch society, including learning the language and adopting cultural norms. I share a deep connection with the country and my Dutch partner, and I consider the Netherlands my home. However, extending the residency requirement to 10 years places me and many others like me in a precarious situation.
Firstly, the financial impact is substantial. It would threaten my financial security and my ability to secure my living in the Netherlands. The extra five years of waiting for citizenship with no guarantee of success only adds uncertainty and stress, especially when family and personal ties are already well-established.
I urge the government to maintain the current 5-year naturalization period, which is already sufficient for demonstrating integration and commitment. Extending this period risks excluding genuinely integrated residents and undermines their contribution to Dutch society.
Thank you for considering the perspective of people like me, who are committed to the Netherlands yet face difficult consequences from this proposal.
