Dear Sir or Madam,

Many highly skilled migrants and international students, including myself, made the decision to come to the Netherlands based on the current naturalisation policy — namely, the possibility of becoming a Dutch citizen after five years of legal residence.

Extending this period would fundamentally change the basis on which many of us planned our future. If this longer term had been known in advance, many people might have chosen other destinations with a more accessible path to citizenship.

Moreover, a longer naturalisation period creates additional uncertainty and a sense of instability. It makes it harder for migrants to build their lives here — for example, when buying a home or making long-term plans for their family and career.

In my own case, I came to the Netherlands as an international student and immediately after graduation started working in a specialised professional role. This path itself represents a clear form of successful integration into Dutch society. Extending the naturalisation term would discourage precisely those individuals who have actively worked to become part of this society.

Therefore, I kindly urge you to take into account the principle of trust and the legitimate expectations of those who came to the Netherlands under the current rules when making your final decision.

Kind regards,
Jafar
