Dear Sir/Madam,
Three years ago, I moved to the Netherlands as an expat, together with my wife and three children. One of the most important reasons for our relocation decision was the possibility of applying for Dutch nationality after five years. We shaped our lives and long-term plans based on that rule.
It feels unfair and unpredictable that such fundamental rules are changed midway. Families like mine make life-changing decisions based on the existing law and expectations. This does not only affect my household but many others who decided to move to the Netherlands based on the five-year term.
If such a change is introduced it should only apply to newcomers (not new applications) who have yet to make their relocation decision. That would be the fair and predictable approach.
The Netherlands has an international reputation as a developed and just country, where reliability and predictability are highly valued. Sudden changes like this undermine that trust.
Yours faithfully.
