Concerns About Increasing the Naturalization Period from 5 to 10 Years
1. Negative Impact on Integration
A longer wait time delays people’s ability to fully belong and participate in Dutch society.
Citizenship provides a sense of security and belonging that encourages stronger integration, community participation, and commitment to the Netherlands.
Extending the period risks making people feel excluded, which can create isolation rather than inclusion.
2. Emotional & Social Burden
Many people build their lives in the Netherlands — working, paying taxes, learning Dutch, raising children.
For them, waiting an extra five years feels like a painful message: “You are welcome to contribute, but not to belong.”
This creates unnecessary sadness and discouragement for families who already see the Netherlands as their home.
3. Impact on Families & Children
Children who grow up in the Netherlands but whose parents face long delays in naturalization may feel less secure.
Families risk being divided between citizens and non-citizens for longer, which harms children’s sense of identity and belonging.
4. Economic & Social Contributions Undervalued.
People who contribute daily to Dutch society — as workers, volunteers, students — are forced to wait longer before being recognized as full members of the community.
This sends the wrong signal to those who are trying their best to integrate and invest in the future of the Netherlands.

Humane Recommendation if the Bill Passes
At Least Exempt Current Residents
It would be unfair and deeply discouraging to suddenly change the rules for people who already started their journey toward citizenship under the current 5-year requirement.
Exempting those who are already in the Netherlands would show compassion and respect for their efforts, sacrifices, and trust in the Dutch system.
