Consultation Response

To the State Secretary and Members of the Cabinet,

As an expat who lives and works in the Netherlands, I would like to express my objection and concerns regarding the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years.

I am a senior software engineer, trained and educated in my home country. Since childhood, I dreamed of living in an advanced and free country, and the Netherlands was always that dream. I moved here because I admire Dutch values and society, and I am hopeful to one day become a Dutch citizen. My sincere wish is to be fully accepted by Dutch society so I can share my knowledge and experience to help make this country even stronger and a better place to live.

Extending the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years risks discouraging highly skilled expats like me. Many of us come here with the intention to build a long-term life, contribute to the economy, and integrate as quickly as possible. However, doubling the waiting period may push some to look toward other countries that offer a clearer and faster path to citizenship. This could reduce the Netherlands’ ability to attract and retain the international talent it needs for continued growth and innovation.

In summary, I believe this decision would significantly affect expats who are motivated to contribute to Dutch society, and I sincerely hope the government will reconsider applying this change.

With respect,
