As an expat living and working in the Netherlands, I want to share why doubling the wait time for citizenship is deeply concerning:
• We already contribute fully – expats pay the same taxes, social security, and VAT as citizens. After the 30% ruling ends, we pay even more with no added benefits.
• Integration is about participation, not time – doubling the years doesn't automatically make anyone “more integrated.”
• Fairness & trust – many of us moved here under the 5-year rule. Changing it mid-way undermines stability and confidence in Dutch policy.
• Global competitiveness – the Netherlands risks losing skilled talent to countries with shorter, fairer paths to citizenship.
• Family impact – children and partners remain in limbo longer, unable to feel true belonging. We came here to build lives, invest, and integrate. Extending naturalisation to 10 years punishes contributors and makes the Netherlands less attractive.
?? I urge policymakers to reconsider this proposal, protect current residents under the 5-year rule, and measure integration by participation — not just waiting time.
