As many other highly skilled migrants have stated, I am really disappointed by the proposal to extend the required residency period for Dutch citizenship to 10 years.

After living here for almost three and a half years, my observation is that treating people as outsiders is the biggest challenge for those who are genuinely trying to integrate into Dutch society. Many of us have already taken a major step by leaving our home countries to build a life here and to see this country as our home. We work, pay our taxes, and follow the rules — otherwise, we wouldn’t even be eligible for a long-term residence permit or citizenship.

When the process takes longer, it makes those who are trying to become Dutch feel even more like outsiders. Plus, there’s the fear of “what if, after all these years, new restrictions are introduced?” We already believed in the country’s promise that we would be eligible for citizenship after five years.

As i stated before, now there is a growing fear: what if, after all this time, new restrictions are introduced and that promise is broken? |That fear , the fear of being permanently pushed to the margins , makes it impossible for people to feel at home. How can you expect us to fully integrate when the process itself creates fear and exclusion?
