As a highly skilled immigrant who has been living, working, and contributing to the Netherlands for nearly three years, I believe extending the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years would be discouraging and counterproductive. It delays full integration, civic participation, and the sense of belonging that citizenship provides. Many of us have made long-term commitments to this country professionally, socially, and economically and doubling the wait time for naturalisation sends a message that our contributions are less valued. A longer path to citizenship may also make the Netherlands less attractive to international talent in the future.
