Subject: Response to Consultation on Extension of Naturalization Periods
I respectfully submit my response regarding the proposal to extend the naturalization period from five years to ten years.
I am opposed to this extension, for the following reasons:
1. Integration and Social Cohesion
Citizenship is a key factor in encouraging newcomers to integrate fully into society. Extending the waiting period delays access to rights and responsibilities, which in turn slows down integration. A ten-year waiting time risks creating a larger group of residents who feel excluded from full participation in society.
2. European and International Standards
In most European Union member states, the naturalization period is between five and eight years. Increasing the requirement to ten years would make [country] one of the strictest in Europe, raising questions about fairness and alignment with international standards.
3. Impact on Families and Communities
Many residents are already contributing through work, taxes, and community involvement. Extending the waiting time would unnecessarily delay their ability to secure stability for themselves and their families, and could negatively affect children who grow up feeling less connected to their home country.
4. Alternative Approaches
If the goal is to strengthen integration, this can be achieved through measures that promote civic participation and community involvement, rather than through a significantly longer waiting period.
Conclusion
For these reasons, I urge that the naturalization period remain at five years, and that integration goals be pursued through measures that encourage inclusion and active participation, rather than by prolonging the path to citizenship
