Extending the waiting period for citizenship sends the opposite signal. People who live, work, pay taxes, and speak Dutch for five years have already demonstrated their commitment to this country. By keeping them in a temporary status for another five years, we don’t encourage integration — we delay it.

Citizenship is not a gift; it’s a framework for participation and responsibility. When people feel that they are trusted members of society, they invest more — socially, economically, and emotionally. A ten-year path risks creating a class of long-term residents who contribute to Dutch society but are never fully part of it. That weakens social cohesion instead of strengthening it.
