I believe extending the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years would negatively affect people who are already committed to building their lives in the Netherlands.
Five years is already a significant amount of time to prove one’s intention to integrate, contribute, and feel part of Dutch society. Doubling that waiting time would create unnecessary uncertainty and delay for people who are working, paying taxes, raising families, and participating in communities every day. Instead of motivating integration, it risks creating frustration and a sense of exclusion.
Citizenship is more than a formality — it provides stability, equal rights, and a feeling of belonging. The longer people are denied that, the harder it becomes for them to truly feel at home. Many people who have lived here for years already consider the Netherlands their home, and a 10-year wait would keep them in limbo for far too long.
The current 5-year requirement strikes a fair balance between demonstrating commitment and allowing people to fully participate in society. Extending it to 10 years would make it harder for people to integrate, not easier.
For these reasons, I strongly believe the waiting period should remain 5 years.
