I strongly object to the proposed extension of the naturalization period.

For almost four years, I have been living in the Netherlands with the clear understanding and expectation that after five years of legal residence, I would be eligible to apply for Dutch nationality. This expectation is based on the existing law and has guided many of my personal, professional, and long-term decisions.

If the naturalization period is now extended, it will have a serious negative impact on people like me who are already close to fulfilling the 5-year requirement. Suddenly changing the rules at this stage creates uncertainty and undermines trust in the legal system.

Such a change would mean:

Years of waiting and planning will no longer count as expected.

People who have integrated, studied, worked, and contributed to Dutch society will face unnecessary delays in obtaining security and stability.

It could discourage newcomers from committing themselves to long-term integration if rules can shift suddenly.

Request
If the government proceeds with extending the naturalization period, I strongly urge that transitional arrangements are made to protect those who are already in the process or close to completing the 5-year requirement. At the very least, those who have already stayed for several years under the current system should not be penalized by new rules introduced so late.

In conclusion, I respectfully ask that the government does not extend the naturalization period, or ensures that the rights and expectations of current residents are safeguarded.
