I strongly oppose the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years. This measure undermines integration, discourages skilled migration, and delays the full inclusion of families and individuals who already call the Netherlands home. I urge the government to reconsider this proposal and uphold the values of fairness, inclusion, and progress.
1. The Netherlands risks becoming an outlier in Europe. Most EU countries maintain a 5-year naturalization period. Extending it to 10 years would isolate the Netherlands from its European peers and send a regressive signal about its commitment to inclusion and human rights.
2. The proposal contradicts demographic and economic needs. With an ageing population, the Netherlands needs to attract and retain highly skilled young professionals. This policy will deter talent from settling here, ultimately harming the economy. Instead of penalizing contributors, the focus should be on managing non-economic migration more effectively.
3. It places a disproportionate burden on law-abiding residents. Many expats already contribute to Dutch society through taxes, work, and community involvement. Extending the naturalization period creates unnecessary legal and emotional uncertainty for families, especially children, and delays their full integration.
4. It risks reverse brain-drain and harms the country’s reputation. Highly skilled migrants will choose other European countries with more inclusive policies. This could lead to a loss of talent in key sectors and damage the Netherlands’ image as a welcoming and progressive nation.
5. A 5-year integration period fosters a stronger sense of belonging. Citizenship is not just a legal status. It’s a symbol of trust and inclusion. A reasonable path to citizenship encourages deeper civic engagement and long-term commitment to Dutch society.
