Dear Sir/Madam.
I am an HSM based expat peacefully living in the Netherlands for the past 3 years. We came to the Netherlands in hope of a good life and are surely having it. I feel myself connected to the country as it has accepted me and my family to build our lives. We are so happy to contribute to Dutch society by working, paying taxes, and integrating.
We put in a huge trust in the vision of the country and society before moving to the Netherlands. We are making significant, long-term commitments to Dutch society—bringing families, investing in education, careers, and community participation—based on the current 5-year naturalization framework.
This proposal also hits the trust and confidence in the country's policies and outlook towards immigrants. First with fluctuation on 30% ruling, language level change, recent protests, all political narratives. This is not what the Netherlands is known for.
Dutch society has been known for its honesty, integrity from the times of trading across the globe. When other European traders were known for their dishonesty, the Dutch upheld their reputation to higher standards.
I respectfully urge reconsideration of this proposal for the following reasons:
1. Integration is willingness but time-dependent
For many residents, even 10-20 yrs are not enough however for a few a couple of years are enough. So encourage the integration structurally in the system rather than blankly increasing the years.
2. Impact on long-term residents and families
This change would disproportionately affect individuals who have already built lives in the Netherlands. It may delay access to rights such as voting, job mobility, and travel freedom.
3. International competitiveness
The Netherlands has long been a destination for global talent. Doubling the naturalization period could make the country less attractive to highly skilled migrants, especially when compared to neighboring EU countries with shorter paths to citizenship.
4. Erosion of Trust
This change risks eroding trust in government. Residents who have planned their lives under existing laws face uncertainty and a sense of unfairness if the naturalization timeline shifts mid-course. Upholding *rechtszekerheid* and *vertrouwensbeginsel* is essential.
I urge maintaining the 5-year naturalization period or introducing exemptions for long-term contributors and integrated families.
Thank you for considering this feedback.
Sincerely,
Bijlage
