To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my heartfelt concern regarding the proposed change to extend the naturalisation period in the Netherlands from five to ten years.
I am a high-skilled migrant from Afghanistan, currently living in the Netherlands for over four years and a few months. I moved here with my family—my spouse and three young children—with great hope and trust in the Dutch values of freedom, opportunity, and inclusion. We have worked hard to integrate, contribute, and build a future in this country.
This proposed change deeply affects me personally. I am just a few months away from becoming eligible for naturalisation under the current five-year rule. Hearing that this law may change for everyone, including those already close to eligibility, is devastating. It feels like the goalposts are being moved after years of commitment and effort.
I came to the Netherlands with the dream that my children would grow up in a safe, stable, and welcoming society. I believed that by working hard and integrating, we would become full members of Dutch society. Extending the naturalisation period to ten years delays that dream and creates uncertainty for families like mine who have already invested so much.
I respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal, or at the very least, grandfather in those who are already close to meeting the current requirements. This would be a fair and compassionate approach that acknowledges the efforts of migrants who have already fulfilled the spirit of the law.
Thank you for your attention and for considering the real human impact of this legislative change.
Sincerely,
