As someone who has made the Netherlands my home, this proposal is deeply painful.
Like many others, I came here with hope — to build a life, to contribute, to belong. For the past years, I’ve done everything expected of me: learning the language, working hard, integrating into Dutch society, and planning for a stable future. I’ve always believed that after 5 years, I would be eligible to apply for citizenship — something I’ve been working toward with dedication.
Now, with this proposal, it feels like the ground has shifted beneath us. To suddenly change the requirement from 5 to 10 years, even for people who are already well on their way, is more than a policy change — it’s a breach of trust. Our plans, our hopes, everything we’ve worked toward, would be delayed or even lost.
I kindly ask you to rethink this decision. Not just from a legal or political point of view, but from a human one. We are people who have invested our lives here. We are not just numbers or files — we are your neighbours, colleagues, and friends.
If this change must go ahead, then please apply it only to new arrivals — not to those who have already committed years of their lives under the current rules.
Let us continue our journey with the dignity, respect, and fairness that the Netherlands is known for.
