To the Consultation Committee for the Ministry of Justice and Security,
I am writing as Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Sanayapalli, a foreign resident in the Netherlands, to oppose the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years. This change is deeply upsetting and disruptive to the long-term plans I, and many others, have built.
I moved to the Netherlands four years ago, basing my decision on the existing 5-year pathway to citizenship. This retroactive change creates instability and undermines the foundation of my life here. Living in legal uncertainty for a decade is incredibly stressful and demoralizing, fostering anxiety rather than a sense of belonging.
After four years of working, paying taxes, and actively integrating, this proposal devalues my contributions. It sends the message that my efforts are not enough to be considered a full member of society. My personal milestones, such as buying a home or starting a family, are tied to gaining citizenship and would be delayed by this extension.
This abrupt, politically motivated policy shift erodes trust in the government's reliability and will likely discourage other talented individuals from settling here. Rather than fostering integration, this plan delays it, marginalizing those committed to making the Netherlands their home.
I urge you to reconsider this proposal due to its profound and destabilizing human impact on those who have chosen to contribute positively to this country.
Sincerely,
Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Sanayapalli
