Extending the Dutch integration requirement from five to ten years risks undermining, rather than strengthening, integration for both highly skilled migrants and the wider migrant community. For highly skilled professionals, a decade-long wait fosters exclusion instead of belonging, discouraging their investment in Dutch society despite their rapid contributions through work, taxes, and innovation. For migrants in general, delaying access to rights essential for civic participation traps families in prolonged uncertainty, slowing language and cultural adaptation and creating intergenerational gaps as children grow up Dutch while parents remain outsiders. The policy also increases the risk of talent drain, as globally mobile workers choose countries with smoother settlement pathways. Integration is driven by inclusion, opportunity, and stability, not by the mere passage of time, and extending requirements threatens to weaken both community cohesion and the Netherlands’ attractiveness as a place to live and work.
