I am an international professional currently residing and working in the Netherlands. Like many other highly skilled migrants, I chose this country for its welcoming environment, progressive values, and strong commitment to diversity, innovation, and global collaboration.
The proposed extension of the residency requirement for citizenship, from five to ten years is a matter of deep concern. Such a change would introduce significant uncertainty for skilled professionals who have built their personal and professional lives around the current framework. Moreover, it risks diminishing the Netherlands appeal as a destination for international talent at a time when expertise and innovation are significantly important to sustaining the nation’s global competitiveness.
A fair, transparent, and consistent immigration policy is essential to preserving the Netherlands’ reputation as an open and forward-looking society. I respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal and to uphold the current five-year pathway to citizenship, which fosters integration, stability, and a shared sense of commitment between skilled migrants and Dutch society.
